DRAMA OF THE GIFTED CHILD - PASADENA

June 28 – August 30, 2009
Opening Reception Saturday, June 27, 7-9p.m.

This exhibition looks to the process of MFA programs as a point of reference to allegorize the relationship to the child in terms of careers in the arts.

The exhibition references the title of a famous book by psychoanalyst Alice Miller which examines the loss of self that occurs in childhood or how you experience mixed messages at large and the subsequent process by which an adult can retrieve his or her identity that was misplaced in earlier years. Artists selected for this exhibition have completed an MFA art program within the past five years and through this process of acceptance and loss, of identity, support, recognition and tension have continued to create new pieces of work.

Artists include Dan Bayles, Julie Orser, Julie Lequin, John Knuth, Marco Rios, Christopher Russell, Amy Robinson, Spencer Douglass, Bari Ziperstein, and Kelly Sears.

VESSNA PERUNOVICH - HALIFAX

Please join us for a performance by Vessna Perunovich. The artist's exhibition "Emblems of the Enigma" (curated by Donald Brackett) opens at Saint Mary's University Art Gallery on Friday night, 26 June and runs until 2 August.

The exhibition includes Installations, projections and performance work by this Toronto-based artist who grew up in the former Yugoslavia. It is associated with the city-wide festival of sound-based art, SoundBytes.

The wrap party for SoundBytes will be held in the gallery following Vessna Perunovich's performance on Saturday night.

ME et MOI are Jessica Struthers, Ashley Struthers, and Emma Campbell. Their collections are an amalgamation of historical references from the 50’s and 60’s and contemporary designs. From season to season their collections have been locally distributed and sold in various retail outlets with great success. After a triumphant showing at Ottawa Fashion Week 2008, they are now planning to show their new collection at Toronto Fashion Week this coming fall.

JONATHAN LORANGE approaches each project as a challenge. He believes that the image has to lead to an intimate encounter between the subject and the viewer, that there is a need to direct one’s vision to a privileged place. His primary passion and dedication to human interest photography has broadened the scope of his work as a photographer in more diverse art forms. Jonathan is completing his Ph.D. in political science at the University of Ottawa.

CHARLOTTE PLAMONDON is a talented individual showing a great personal interest in theater and fashion modeling. Her portfolio was recently produced under the art direction of Vincenzo Pagliaro. It has recieved positive interest from agencies in Toronto, Milan, and London. At present, a prominent New-York agency has expressed an interest in her work as a model. Charlotte is planning to study economics at McGill University.

There is a spiritual essence to the process [of making art] and fulfillment in its experience. There a dialogue between my brush in hand, the paint and the canvas surface. It's a dance that never seems to end; it only stops once in a while to take another breathe. I use a variety of mixed media in my work, usually layering with acrylic, collage, and often ending with the juiciness of oil paint. From an over 23 year career as a massage therapist, the human form is most familiar to me, therefore, figurative representation is typically found in my work. I am a story teller....painting only for me....but occasionally, finding the courage to share it with others. It's a life-long struggle of releasing pieces of my soul, falling without a safety net, touching ground, then risking the leap again! Lately, I have been working on a series using my fingers as brushes....I guess you could say I have a'knead' to massage the figures into the canvas---is it a little toxic?...maybe. Is it a fun?...you bet!

The grunt gallery is pleased to present Beat Nation: Hip Hop as Indigenous Culture June 26, 2009. Co-curated by Tania Willard and Skeena Reece, Beat Nation is a web-based project located at beatnation.org. The grunt gallery will be hosting an exhibition of artists’ work featured on the site, and an event showcasing DJs and MCs from the web project will occur the evening of the exhibition opening.


“Native graffiti art, Indigenized iPods©, Inuit break dancing, Indigenous- language hip hop and video, Indian bling and urban wear: the roots of hip hop culture and music have been transformed by Indigenous cultures and identities into new forms of visual culture and music that echo the realities of Aboriginal people. ART'ISSIMO Foundation a signé et renouvellé l'accord de location de tableaux avec Silver Square SA. Le 15 avril dernier, ART'ISSIMO a changé l'accrochage du SILVER SQUARE Brussels' Business Center (15 toiles récentes de François-Charles Bazelaire) au 475 avenue Louise 10ème et 11ème étages (ouvert de 9:00 à 18:30h.) et vient d'accrocher des toiles de François-Charles Bazelaire (4 toiles de grands formats) et de Valérie Lenders (7 très beaux petits formats) à Berchem (Antwerpen) au siège de SILVER SQUARE, impressionnant Business Center de 1000 m2, tous deux dirigés par Axel Kuborn et Patrick Moens de Fernig.
